Precor elliptical ramp adjustment: can't enter Diagnostics Service menu

I purchased a used Precor 400 series elliptical with an R20 console. It's got very low hours and is in very good condition but I believe the ramp needs adjustment. I've been able to locate the service manual and instructions, the adjustment is quite easy. BUT, the service manual code to enter the Diagnostics Service menu will not work for me. As soon as I enter the third digit it exits the code entry mode.

I can get into the Validation Diag, Info Display and Settings, but the Diag Service menu doesn't work.

Has anyone done this and know why that would be?

    I could be a bad button on the console. does the button work otherwise?
